Pauline Duivenvoorden & Phil MacLean
1st Generation Egg Farmer- Barn Fine Eggs, Deer Lake, NL
Since 1989, Pauline Duivenvoorden and her husband Phil MacLean have been dairy farmers on Newfoundland’s west coast.
“My husband Phil and I are very interested in the area of food production,” she adds. “There was an opportunity to diversify.” A decommissioned mink farm down the road from their herd was the perfect place to build a new egg farm. They built the 200-by-40-foot-barn in 2016 to prepare for their first flock in 2017.

With a flock of 7,600 birds, the couple loves watching their very productive flock of Lohmann hens produce food for the province. And as a provider for their community, both Pauline and Phil understand the importance of animal welfare and how it impacts the products that consumers will purchase. Quality assurance, animal welfare, and proper supply management are the pillars of the egg industry in Newfoundland, with Barn Fine Eggs leading by example.
“It’s pleasant to enter the barn and listen to the birds and know that they’re content and satisfied and that we’re meeting their needs.”
She takes her part in the local food supply very seriously and considered it a great honour to be recognized. “Eggs are an amazing package of protein,” says Pauline, who feeds the flock a corn and soya bean diet that is boosted with a nutrient pack of vitamins and minerals. Being only one of two egg farms on the west coast of Newfoundland, Pauline and Phil take great pride in providing quality products. Their flock of hens is roughly 7,600 strong, producing thousands of fresh eggs for the people of Newfoundland and Labrador every single day.
“We are farmers, and we have a passion for what we do.”
