With massive green and white barns housing the property’s thousands of Leghorn hens, the farm is a buzz of activity. Today, Curtis Somerton and his wife Crystal lead egg production on the massive egg farm, started by Curtis’s grandfather in 1963.

With massive green and white barns housing the property’s thousands of Leghorn hens, the farm is a buzz of activity. Today, Curtis Somerton and his wife Crystal lead egg production on the massive egg farm, started by Curtis’s grandfather in 1963.

“My grandfather was given the opportunity to buy a farm and he wanted the challenge of it.”

says Curtis, who notes that his grandfather gave up a car dealership to dive into farming. In 2004, The Munn Poultry Farm was relocated to Ocean Pond in order to expand existing operations. The first egg was collected there in December 2005, but it took more than a year to build the new operation from the ground up, and it continues to grow to this day.

“We started with about 70 acres of cleared land, but now we have close to 250 acres and we make hay for the dairy farmers.”

says Crystal. Curtis’s mother, Leslie Munn, is still very active on the farm to this day and loves to sit in the yellow, wooden chairs that overlook the fields. 

The Munn Poultry Farm produces just about 113,000 fresh eggs daily, with 125,000 healthy Leghorn hens hard at work. Two layer barns are connected by a breezeway and a grower barn sits off to the side with 65,000 pullets (young hens less than one year old) waiting for their time to shine.

Each year, the farm produces more than 3 million dozen eggs.
