In 1963, Curtis’ grandfather started poultry farming in Portugal Cove. The farm has thrived through generational leadership, with Curtis’ mother taking over the farm in the 1980s and Curtis taking over after graduating from high school.

For 20 years, Curtis and Crystal Somerton have worked alongside each other at Munn Poultry Farms in Ocean Pond. Overlooking 250 acres of farmland, they have built one of the largest solo standing farms in Newfoundland and Labrador. Family, collaboration, and a sense of pride are the keys to success for Curtis, Crystal, and the entire team at Munn Poultry.

We absolutely love what we do, we don’t work a day in our lives.

Curtis and Crystal regularly work over 80 hours a week on the farm, but it’s a labour of love. “We have a lifestyle, not a job,” says Curtis, who loves the opportunity to be with his family even when he’s working. Along with Curtis and his hardworking family members, the Munn Poultry Farm employs a staff of 10.

Curtis Family

Giving people employment in rural Newfoundland, that if it wasn’t for the farm, they wouldn’t be able to stay and work here, feels pretty good”.

Since acquiring their initial 70 acres in 2005, and growing to over 250 acres, Crystal and Curtis share a great sense of pride in their work at the farm each and every day. “There’s so much pride in feeding people, a quality product, something that’s so nutritious. There’s so much pride in what we do.”

They enjoy every aspect of their outdoor lifestyle with their two daughters, Lindsey and Robyn, who love to play outside with their two dogs. Both Curtis and Crystal are thankful for the lives they’ve built for each other, and take pride in serving their community with high quality, locally sourced eggs.
